Companies respond to the health of the economy.  As a Business Strategy Consulting firm, it’s our job to keep track of the health of the economy in order to temper our judgement about corporate strategy.  We use a proprietary index, which we call our Economic Performance Index.  It is based on the indices reported by the Economic Statistics Administration of the United States Department of Commerce.  We report two indices.  One is the average Economic Performance Index for the six months ending on the month shown.  The second is the normalized six month index, which adjusts for any biases.  Specifically, a normalized index of greather than 50% we view as a positive reading, signalling an expansionary economy.  And a normalized reading of less than 50% we view as negative, typically that of a retracting economy.
